Marine palynology and its use for studying nearshore environments

چکیده

Palynology is the study of microfossils composed of highly resistant organic matter called palynomorphs. In the sediments of neritic environments, palynomorphs may include cysts of dinoflagellates, phycoma of prasinophytes, organic linings of benthic foraminifers and thecamoebians, in addition to inputs from the terrestrial vegetation (pollen grains and spores) or the freshwater biota (chlorococcales). Marine palynology is thus used for characterizing the type of sedimentary environment, identifying the source of organic matter in the sediment, and weighting the relative importance of fluvial and pelagic inputs. Among marine palynomorphs, dinoflagellate cysts or dinocysts usually dominate the assemblages. Dinocysts comprise phototrophic and heterotrophic taxa and occur in almost all aquatic environments. Along the continental margins, assemblages are usually characterized by high species diversity and cyst concentrations reaching up to 10 cysts cm. The distribution of dinocyst assemblages in sediments shows latitudinal patterns in addition to onshore to offshore gradients. Multivariate analyses illustrate close relationships between dinocyst assemblages and sea-surface parameters such as sea-ice cover, salinity, temperature, seasonality and productivity. Transfer functions developed from dinocysts permit the reconstruction of seasurface temperature and salinity and the evaluation of past productivity, with applications dealing with climate changes and eutrophication. Dinocysts are also used for the study of harmful algal blooms since a few taxa relate to toxic species.

Early Holocene Paleoenvironmental changes in North of Gavkhouni Swamp- East of Isfahan-Iran: a review of evidence from palynology

This study was conducted for palynological investigation of recent deposits from east Isfahan in order to reconstruct past environmental conditions of this region. Segzi area is located in 30 km east Isfahan and Rangideh area is 65 km in south east Isfahan. In these areas it was seen, in depth of soil profile, dark layers containing organic matters. Soil samples were taken from five points and ...

Nearshore Marine Conservation Planning in the Pacific Northwest: Exploring the Utility of a Siting Algorithm for Representing Marine Biodiversity

Terrestrial conservation planning is well developed. In comparison, there are only a handful of published marine conservation plans and few of them are quantitative. The Nature Conservancy’s strategic planning approach, called “Conservation by Design,” employs an ecoregional planning methodology to construct conservation portfolios, or high-priority conservation areas. This chapter reports on t...

Rebuilding Biodiversity of Patagonian Marine Molluscs after the End-Cretaceous Mass Extinction

We analysed field-collected quantitative data of benthic marine molluscs across the Cretaceous-Palaeogene boundary in Patagonia to identify patterns and processes of biodiversity reconstruction after the end-Cretaceous mass extinction. We contrast diversity dynamics from nearshore environments with those from offshore environments. In both settings, Early Palaeogene (Danian) assemblages are str...

Identifying critical regions in small-world marine metapopulations.

The precarious state of many nearshore marine ecosystems has prompted the use of marine protected areas as a tool for management and conservation. However, there remains substantial debate over their design and, in particular, how to best account for the spatial dynamics of nearshore marine species. Many commercially important nearshore marine species are sedentary as adults, with limited home ...

Coastal Groundwater Management with Nearshore Resource Interactions

This paper develops a regional hydrologic-ecologic-economic model of groundwater use and a nearshore ecosystem. Particularly, we model coastal groundwater management and its effects on discharge, nearshore water quality, and marine biota (e.g., indigenous marine algae). We show that incorporating the external effects on nearshore resources increases the optimal steady-state head level. Numerica...
